May 12th: the Sensa Festival (Venice)

The Sensa Festival commemorates a historical event that took place on Ascension Day, May 9th 1000. On that day,  Doge Pietro Orseolo II left Venice at the head of a great fleet, to defend the inhabitants of Zara and Dalmatia against the incursions of Croatians and Narentines. Before leaving, the Doge boarded the cerimonial galley, the Bucintoro, and set out to sea along San Nicolò di Lido Canal, while  the Bishop of Venice gave his blessing to the Adriatic. Having reached the mouth of the harbour, the Doge then threw a golden ring into the sea to symbolically marry Venice to the sea and demonstrate  the Serenissima's domination of the gulf. Every year since then, the Doge (now the Mayor of Venice) has repeated this solemn ritual. The re-enactment of this cerimony is also accompained by numerous other attractions, including the Sensa market in the cloisters of the San Nicolò church on the Lido, and the Voga alla Veneta rowing races - the water parade staged by Associazioni Remiere (Venice Rowing Club)

Sonja from Germany

I participated at an intensive language course in Italy from 17.09.2012 to
28.09.2012. Therefore I decided to study at the school IL Faro. The school is located
in the center of Caorle. It takes just a few minutes to get to the beach or to the
Citycenter, where all the shops and restaurants are. While studying I lived in a
holiday apartment in front of the beach. The apartment was very nice and pretty
modern. I booked this apartment at the agency "adriamare" which was recommended to me
by school.
There are three teachers at school. The Italian courses are taught exclusively in
Italian language. This is conductive to advanced learning. The school also provides
all the study material. The main season in Italy ends in September. This is
particularly noticeable at school, because there are just a few students. Therefore
I had private lessons with Miss Liviana Cechet. There have been two students from
Kanada, too, who participated in another course. Every day I had to prepare some
homework, for example grammar or writing exercises. The following day I discussed
the homework with my teacher. So I had the chance to improve my knowledge about the
italian language in dialogue.
I can highly recommend this school, especially the committed and motivated
teachers. Moreover the school organizes Sight Seeing Tours. This is an
extraordinary opportunity to get to know the Italian culture.
I had a very nice time in Caorle and in addition it was possible for me to improve my
Italian language skills within a short time.

Pegeen Vail Guggenheim in Venice

More than 40 years ago, Peggy Guggenheim was informed of her daughter's death Pegeen by a telegram while on a trip to Mexico. In her autobiography, Peggy Guggenheim wrote, "(this was in Mexico) I was informed of the terrible news of the death of my daughter, my darling Pegeen that was for me a mother, a friend and a sister.. "
Pegeen Vail Guggenheim was long forgotten. Her little son, Benjamin Hélion with Benjamin Lanot, both authors bring to life the painter in an illustrated biography: PEGEEN VAIL GUGGENHEIM. At the same time an exhibition is devoted to the Guggenheim in Venice to celebrate Pegeen and her painting.

Terre della Venezia Orientale

Terre della Venezia Orientale. Guida turistica e culturale (€ 14,50), edited by Laura Pavan (Ediciclo Editore), is the perfect guidebook for those who want to discover the eastern part of the Veneto region, its art, its wines and its gastronomy.
The book will guide you through the territory between the rivers Sile and Tagliamento, and the many small cities and towns of the area, from San Donà to Portogruaro, and along the shore, from Cavallino-Treporti to Bibione, including also Caorle.

Terre della Venezia Orientale, published with the support of the province of Venice, combines scientific information with a clear and easy to read style. The numerous photographs, detailed maps of the itineraries of the territory and maps of the main cities make it an extremely user-friendly tool for the tourist.
There are four suggested itineraries: from the Sile river to the Piave river; from the Piave river to the Livenza river; from the Livenza river to the Lemene river, and from the Lemene river to the Tagliamento river. Each itinerary begins from a town on the coast and goes inland following the river. At the end of each itinerary, the reader can find a section dedicated to the typical products of the area and useful information (addresses and phone numbers of tourist offices, museums and cultural institutions, parks, markets, fairs and cultural events calendar).

The guidebook is also available in English, German and Slovenian.

La Fenice reborn from its ashes

It was 29 January 1996, when the Teatro La Fenice in Venezia was completely destroyed in an arson started by an electrician working at the renovation.
All the major national institutions worked to guarantee the re-construction of the beautiful theatre, and after 8 years the theatre was finally re-built. On 14 December 2003, the new Fenice was inaugurated before the then President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, with a concert directed by Riccardo Muti. Since 1st January 2004, to celebrate the re-edification of the theatre, every New Year’s Day the Concerto di Capodanno takes place to enhance with opera pieces the famous symphonic concert at the Musikverein in Vienna. If you are in Venice stop by Campo San Fantin (San Marco), and enjoy a tour of the Fenice and maybe even a show !

Buon appetito!

Upon request, we share the recipe of a traditional local dish: “sarde in saor” (Venetian Style sardines).
It is generally eaten as a starter or antipasto but it could also be served as main course.

Sarde in saor (Jewish-Venetian antipasto)

Ingredients:
1 kg of big fresh sardines
700g onion
50g pine nuts
50g raisins
2 glasses of wine vinegar

Preparation
Clean and gut the sardines. Remove the heads. Flour the sardines and fry them in oil. Rinse and dry the excess oil. Add vinegar, pine nuts and raisins. In a serving dish, alternate a layer of sardines and a layer of sautéed onions until you have laid all the sardines. Top with the remaining onions. Let it marinate and serve cold.

From Japan

Haiku is a Japanese classic poetry form, a snapshot of a sensation coming from the outside world: it is not a photograph of an item, rather of an atmosphere. Basho, master of haiku in the 17th century, wrote that to write a haiku one needs “to say simply what happens in that place, in that precise moment.”
Caorle’s dam, between Piazza Vescovado and the sea, holds two haiku by two contemporary great poets, Aigner and Zanzotto. In a few words, they captured the moment in which they opened their souls to the world without the desire to possess it, just with intention of letting it be.
